Fort Hamer Bridge and Road Improvements
About
Manatee County conducted a Project Development and Environment (PD&E) Study to identify and evaluate potential improvements along Fort Hamer Road from Upper Manatee River Road to US 301. On July 2, 2025, the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) approved the State Environmental Impact Report (SEIR) for the Fort Hamer Road PD&E Study officially ending this phase of the project.
Manatee County is proceeding with the design and permitting of bridge and roadway improvements along this 3.8-mile segment of Fort Hamer Road. Proposed improvements include converting the existing two-lane undivided roadway to a four-lane divided typical section from Upper Manatee River Road to US 301. This includes a new bridge parallel to the existing bridge to provide the additional two lanes across the Manatee River. These improvements are intended to increase capacity to accommodate future travel demands projected as a result of area-wide population and employment growth. Additional goals of the improvements include enhancing safety conditions and accommodating multimodal activity.
Project Goals
- Improve the operational capacity along Fort Hamer Road to accommodate future travel demand
- Enhance safety conditions along the corridor for all roadway users
- Provide accommodations for multimodal activity
Potential Community Benefits
- Reduces traffic congestion, enhancing vehicular traffic operations and function of the Fort Hamer Road corridor
- New shared-use path will increase safety for non-motorists and provide local connectivity
- Provides access to safe, affordable, accessible, and sustainable mobility for all roadway users
